A quite corner of the Sandhills
where life slows to the rhythm of the land,
the horses invite us to be present,
the earth invites us to feel grounded,
and the stillness gives us space to listen
and reconnect with the wisdom within.

Why I Chose This Path
What Brought Me Here
I found my way back to the horses..

During some of the hardest seasons of my life, I returned to the place where I had always felt most like myself. Being with horses gave me room to be still. They did not ask me to have the right words or pretend I was okay. They simply met me where I was, and in their quiet presence, I began to slow down, listen inward, and reconnect with the parts of myself I had pushed aside.

That return changed the direction of my life. It brought together my love of horses, my desire to help people grow personally & professionally, and is the heart behind First Light Farms of the Sandhills. Today, I am grateful to offer others the kind of space I once needed—a soft place to land, take a breath, and begin finding their way back to themselves. I have learned that the road home can take longer than we expect, but taking the long way does not mean we are lost.

Our mission at first light farm of the sandhills
A Place With Purpose
At First Light Farm of the Sandhills, we honor the Native American meaning of First Light—a symbol of transformation, renewal, and the sacred power of new beginnings.
Through Equine-Facilitated Learning and Life Coaching, we create space for deeper awareness, emotional balance, and the courage to embrace your own unfolding journey. With the horses as guides and mirrors, we explore the Way of the Horse—learning through presence, connection, reflection, and the wisdom of the moment
Guided by the heartbeat of the herd and the healing rhythm of the land, First Light is a safe and grounded place where authentic connection, reflection, and empowerment can flourish. Our hope is that each person leaves with a deeper connection to their own inner wisdom and a renewed sense of purpose, balance, and possibility.
Every sunrise is an invitation to begin again—with grace, with purpose, and with an open heart
The healing power of horses
What Horses Help Us Notice
Quietly present and deeply responsive, horses invite us to slow down, tune in, and discover new perspectives through meaningful connection, reflection, and coaching.
Not a riding lesson or a classroom. This is different.
Horses live in the present moment, constantly taking in and responding to what is happening around them. Time spent quietly grooming, walking, or simply being near a horse can invite us to slow our own pace and become more aware of our breath, body, emotions, and surroundings.
Horses communicate largely through body language, movement, attention, and subtle shifts in behavior. Connecting with them asks us to pay attention beyond words—to become more aware of our own signals and how we respond to another living being.
Working with a horse gives us something real to respond to in the moment. What happens between you and the horse can become an opportunity to notice patterns, explore emotions, practice new ways of responding, and reflect on how those experiences connect to everyday life.

If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we are not really living

Horses Who Make First Light Home
Every good story has its own cast of characters, and at First Light, the horses are the heart of ours. Each has a personality, a story, and a little something different to teach us. Some may draw you in with their quiet presence, while others might make you laugh, challenge your perspective, or remind you to slow down and simply be.

They aren’t just horses who call this farm home. They’re partners in this journey, each bringing their own kind of magic to the work we do here. We can’t wait for you to meet them.

Alton Cox - Farm operations
The Steady Hand Behind First Light
Every farm has that one person who keeps things running, fixes what breaks, and tackles the never-ending list of projects. At First Light Farms, that’s Alton!
A proud U.S. Army veteran and retired Physical Education teacher with the Department of Defense schools at Fort Bragg, Alton has spent much of his life serving others, teaching, and staying active.
His love for horses goes back to childhood, growing up riding and eventually owning his very first horse after leaving the Army. So life on the farm is nothing new to him!
These days, retirement looks a little different. He’s traded the gymnasium for pastures, fences, farm equipment, and whatever else needs fixing. As our resident handyman, farmhand, and all-around problem solver, Alton is one of the hardworking hands behind the scenes who helps bring First Light Farms to life.

And with Niki’s big dreams and ever-growing project list, retirement is anything but boring!

What's calling you?
Finding Your Way Home
Sometimes you don’t need another answer. You just need a little space to slow down, listen inward, and notice what’s already asking for your attention.
Come spend some time at the farm. Meet the horses. Take a breath. We can talk about where you are, what’s been stirring, and what you might be ready to explore. There’s no script for where the conversation needs to go. Just a quiet place to begin, a little room to listen, and the freedom to find your way home to yourself.
Come as you are. Wherever life finds you, there’s space for you here
